Biography

“There are many good dancers in the world, but few have a truly special quality that commands your attention and won´t let you go. Miguel Vargas is one such performer.”

— Scotsman, August 2010

Flamenco is an integral part of Miguel's life from an early age. By six, he had already debuted as a flamenco prodigy, captivating audiences with his innate talent. Remarkably, by twelve, he was sharing his knowledge of the art as a teacher. This early immersion not only honed his technical skills but also allowed him to develop a distinctive, personal style that set him apart.

After earning his degree in 1994, Miguel began his professional career performing at Seville’s iconic tablao, Los Gallos. Collaborating with flamenco legends like Manuela Carrasco and Mario Maya, Miguel’s talent earned him a place in Maya’s company. A highlight of this collaboration was a performance before the King and Queen of Spain at the opening of the Winter Sports World Championships in Granada in 1996. Following this milestone, Miguel performed at New York’s Lincoln Center and the Avignon Theatre Festival, culminating in a tour through France.

In 1997, Miguel founded his own flamenco company. Just a year later, he performed at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco, the world’s most prestigious flamenco festival. From there, his career expanded to global stages, including performances in Madrid, New York, Singapore, Japan, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, and Dubai.

Miguel’s artistic journey extended beyond performance to include collaborations on CDs and television projects with renowned artists such as Kiko Veneno and Esperanza Fernández. His role as a director and choreographer flourished in 2010 with the creation of his company, the Miguel Vargas Flamenco. The company’s debut production, Rhythms with Soulpremiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to critical acclaim and later graced stages such as Seville’s Lope de Vega Theatre and the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman.

In 2014, Miguel premiered India – The Dream of Anantapur at the Festival of Dance and Theatre at Niebla Castle, showcasing flamenco’s ability to transcend cultural boundaries while celebrating its rich heritage.

Today, Miguel Vargas is widely regarded as one of flamenco’s most celebrated figures. As both a performer and an ambassador of Spanish culture, he continues to inspire audiences worldwide. Miguel also serves as the Director of the Centre of Art and Flamenco of Seville, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the timeless art of flamenco.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Miguel takes pride in his family legacy. He is the father of two gifted artists—a percussionist and a singer—with whom he frequently performs. For Miguel and his family, flamenco is more than an art form; it is a way of life, passed down through generations and cherished deeply.

Miguel Vargas continues to mesmerize audiences with his performances, classes, and workshops, sharing the profound spirit, beauty, and soul of flamenco on stages across the globe.
